My latest book is flowing like lava! I love when that happens. When the characters are constantly chattering in my ear or scenes are playing in the background when I’m doing everything else. It’s wonderful! I should have the cover release very soon and a blurb for content. It is true that readers get tired of book locations in New York and California? I hope not. lol
Now onto some movies I’ve watched recently.
I was alerted to People We Meet On Vacation from buzz I’d heard on Facebook. “Have you seen it yet?” “It’s the greatest, I’m in love!” “It’s the modern day When Harry Met Sally.” Yes, I dare say someone did make the comparison. So, I did what anyone who watched Harry and Sally annually would do…I popped the corn (actually my boyfriend did this), I got my movie-watching-blanket, and I took a deep breath as the opening started. So here are my takeaways. And just in case you don’t read anything else, spoiler alert…I feel whoever compared that movie with the iconic Harry and Sally should have their head examined.
The main character, Poppy had so much potential, so I’m not sure why the writer didn’t hand her some more rope to grow as a person. It’s like she remained a college student for the entirety of the film. And for me, I was put off from her promiscuous behavior with men. One minute she’s telling the other lead she doesn’t like her current boyfriend and the next minute she’s sucking his face and being carried off by him. I’m not even sure that constitutes as insecurity at that point. She was just shallow and empty. It left the lead guy, Alex, who thought they just shared a breakthrough moment, done by her and her antics. Frankly I was, too.
Overall it was entertaining. I liked the fact they were new actors, not ragged out in 20 other movies, performing the same role. I wasn’t swept away by any stretch like so many other bloggers, but I found it to be something on the screen while eating my savory popcorn. It lacked depth for me. The only growth came when she decided to stop acting the way she’d been. And who knows, if the film lasted a few more minutes, maybe she’d found a way to leave the main guy. 🙂
The next week I watched The Starling, staring Melissa McCarthy.
Granted, it’s been a hot minute since it debuted, but I found the cast interesting. Kevin Kline? I mean, when has that man been in something recently? Okay, so not recently, but back then when this was filmed. And the other guy…the one from Bridesmaids? Chris O’Dowd. I had to look it up actually. So, in a nutshell, this couple loses their young daughter (as in, she died unexpectantly) and now they are facing life in a state of confusion, anger, and depression. Now I know what you’re thinking, this is not something I want to grab into a bowl of corn and watch with anticipation. And I get it, but it’s more of a love story than People You Meet On Vacation, I assure you. This is life. This is losing… a lot. Then recalibrating and finding your way back to what glued you together in the first place. There were a lot of laugh-out-loud moments. How could it not, it has Melissa in it. But it also had some life-sucks moments that you just stopped eating and took it all in. I enjoyed it. It helped that the ending was HEA, too. Well, as HEA as it could be.
Who knows what I’ll watch…no, actually I do know what I’m watching next weekend. It’s Valentine’s Day and I’m going to go see Wuthering Heights. Now I know for certain it is not going to have Emily’s full content without alteration. I get steamed just watching the trailer. But it is my all time favorite book, so I must go and give a look-see to what this new adaptation is all about. I will be sure to leave my review once I do.
I hope everyone has a great last couple of days to your week! Be safe and let the sun shine on your face. I’m sure everyone is lacking Vitamin D out there. And here!
